Hampi, in Karnataka, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th–16th centuries. It boasts ruins of palaces, temples, markets, and fortifications spread across a surreal, boulder-strewn landscape. Key structures include the Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple with its iconic stone chariot, and the Lotus Mahal.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi reflects the empire’s wealth, military strength, and architectural innovation. It was a major trade hub and cultural center before being sacked in 1565. Today, it attracts historians, pilgrims, and tourists worldwide.
