What role does the liver play in the human body’s functioning?
Updated: 11-Apr-2025

The liver is the largest internal organ and performs over 500 essential functions. Its main roles include detoxifying harmful substances, producing bile to help digest fats, storing vitamins and minerals, regulating blood sugar levels, and metabolizing drugs and alcohol. The liver also helps in producing important proteins for blood clotting and immune function. It’s incredibly resilient and can regenerate damaged tissue.

However, long-term damage from alcohol, infections (like hepatitis), or fatty liver disease can lead to cirrhosis or liver failure. A balanced diet, limited alcohol, and regular health checkups support liver health.
